NCCC beats Adirondack in playoff opener

Niagara County Community swept visiting SUNY Adirondack in Region III Div. III quarterfinal action Sunday afternoon. The Thunderwolves (40-5), who are ranked No. 8 in the latest NJCAA Div. III poll, advance to this weekend's Region III Div. III Final Four.

Niagara CCC 5, SUNY Adirondack 3

Sophomore right-hander Matt Matre improved to 8-0 on the year after tossing 6 2/3 innings. He allowed just three hits, three earned runs and struck out five. Freshman lefty Alex Licata threw 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief and classmate Cameron Voss picked up his second save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Sophomores Michael Colosi, Charles Edwards and Brett Helmbrecht along with freshman Zarley Cina each finished with an RBI.

Niagara CCC 10, SUNY Adirondack 0 (5 inn.)

Freshman flame thrower Christian Young gave up just two hits and struck out eight to improve to 7-0 on the season. Sophomore Brad Wroblewski was 3-for-3 with a home run, Edwards finished 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs and both Colosi and Helmbrecht had two hits and two RBIs.

NCCC, which is the tournament's top overall seed, will play No. 4 Jefferson CC at 5 p.m. Friday in the opening round of the doublle-elimination Region III Div. III Final Four at Veteran's Memorial Park in Little Falls.
