Niagara County Community College split a doubleheader with NJCAA Div. II Delta (Mich.) College in Opening-Day action at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Fla. on Wednesday afternoon.
Niagara CCC 12, Delta College 6
Freshman shortstop Brandon Nicholson had a triple and three RBIs to pace the Thunderwolves' offense, which was aided by 10 walks. Classmate Joe Milkowski added two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Sophomore catcher Brett Helmbrecht also had a pair of hits, while second-year ace Matt Matre struck out four in five innings of work to earn the win.
Delta College 5, Niagara CCC 4
Freshman southpaw Cameron Voss struck out nine batters in 4 2/3 innings, but it wasn't enough in the nightcap. Freshman Alex Licata had a pair of Ks in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Offensively, Nicholson had two doubles and two runs scored, freshman Zarley Cina added two hits, including a double, and sophomore second baseman Michael Colosi chipped in with an RBI single.
Next up for the Thunderwolves (1-1) is a twinbill with another NJCAA Div. II foe - Macomb (Mich.) CC. First pitch is set for 2:45 p.m. Thursday.
