Voss tosses no-hitter; Matre shines

Niagara County Community College picked up its first sweep of the young season on the strength of a pair of outstanding pitching performances Monday at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida. The Thunderwolves move to 6-4 on the year.

Sophomore Matt Matre improved to 2-0 on the season after tossing six shutout innings. The right-hander allowed just four hits, while striking out five and walking none. Classmate Mike Markelonis threw a scoreless seventh frame. Offensively, sophomore Laine Renaud and freshman Brian Hodges each had a pair of RBIs, while freshman Nate Chase chipped in with two hits and two runs scored. Freshman shortstop Brandon Nicholson stole three bases in the win.

Freshman Cameron Voss tossed a complete-game, no-hitter for his first collegiate victory. The southpaw finished with 11 strikeouts. Sophomore catcher Brett Helmbrecht led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while freshman James Brnik had an RBI and first-year outfielder Joe Milkowski contributed two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Next up for the T-Wolves is a double dip with Minnesota State Community & Technical College. First pitch is set for 10:15 a.m. Tuesday.
