T-Wolves sweep Cayuga to open season

SUNY Niagara opened its spring 2024 season with a sweep of Region III foe Cayuga Community College this past weekend at Falcon Park in Auburn. The Thunderwolves (2-0), ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA Div. II preseason poll, now prepare for a 16-game Florida trip.

SUNY Niagara 14, Cayuga CC 2

Sophomore Andrew Stillinger was 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored and classmate Gavyn Boyle clubbed a three-run home run in the blowout win. Also for N-Trip, sophomore Matthew Procopio was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and second-year standout Riley Loomis added a two-run triple. On the mound, sophomore Andrew Damiani notched seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Sophomore Zachary Fike allowed just one hit to pick up a three-inning save.

SUNY Niagara 11, Cayuga CC 4

Sophomore Steven Merkel ripped a pair of doubles on his way to five RBIs in the victory. Procopio, meanwhile, hit a two-run homer and freshman Braden Hill was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. Also for the T-Wolves, freshman Weston Thompson chipped in with two RBIs and Loomis was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Sophomore Peter Skulski picked up the win on the bump as he did not allow an earned run in 4.2 innings of work.
