Thunderwolves win two tight ballgames

SUNY Niagara rallied for a pair of hard-fought Region III wins over visiting Jamestown Community College on Thursday at Sal Maglie Stadium. The Thunderwolves, ranked No. 7 in the latest NJCAA Div. III poll, improved to 29-7 overall and 13-1 in Western Division play. The same two teams are slated to meet at Noon Saturday at Diethrick Park in Jamestown.

Sophomores Steven Merkel and Nicholas Schulz had RBI sacrifice flies in the fifth inning to break open a tie game. Sophomore Owen Silliman finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, classmate Brett Johnson was 2-for-3 and freshman Gavyn Boyle ripped an RBI double. Freshman Aidan Paul tossed three innings of hitless relief to improve to 5-1 on the season. Paul also registered six Ks.

SUNY Niagara 7, Jamestown CC 5

Freshman Joshua Toolen threw 6.1 innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory. The right-hander allowed just four hits and struck out six to pick up his first win of the season. At the plate, Schulz went 3-for-3 with a run-scoring double and three runs, freshman Adrian Salas finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and freshman Nigel Sebastianelli was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
