Niagara County Community College jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but couldn't hang on as it lost, 6-3, to visiting CCBC Catonsville in season-opening non-conference action Saturday afternoon. NCCC falls to 0-1 on the young season.
NCCC freshman Tyler Van Buren opened the scoring with a header off a throw-in from classmate Noah Thompson. Fellow first-year forward Brayden Skobjak buried a penalty kick seven minutes later to make it 2-0 in favor of the hosts.
The Cardinals cut the lead in half just before intermission and then opened the flood gates with four consecutive goals over an eight-minute stretch midway through the second stanza. Sophomore Ryan LaRuffa did tack on a late tally for NCCC, which got 20 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Josh Westphal.
The T-Wolves are right back at it on Sunday when they host Region III opponent Mohawk Valley CC at 2 p.m.
