Niagara County Community College opened its season with a pair of wins at this past weekend's Montgomery College Tip-Off Tournament. NCCC, which is receiving votes in the preseason NJCAA Div. II poll, is now 2-0 overall on the young season. It's home opener is slated for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday vs. Finger Lakes CC.
Niagara CCC 79, Cumberland CCC 35
The Thunderwolves built up a 52-12 lead at the half with five players scoring in double figures. Freshman forward Nina Starkweather led the way with 12 points and eight rebounds, while freshman wing Neraelyn Trueheart had 10 points and six boards and sophomore guard Peyton Butts recorded 10 points and three steals. Sophomore point guard Alliyah Gillespie and freshman center Diamond Fedrick each added 10 points in the win.
Niagara CCC 91, Columbus State CC 50
NCCC forced 39 turnovers and out-scored the Cougars 37-5 in the decisive third quarter. Gillespie had a game-high 20 points with Butts adding 15 points and five steals. Sophomore guard Demi Battin netted 11 points off the bench, while classmate Taliyah Hopkins filled the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks.
