Jayhawks Fall to Niagara County In Region Championship Game

SANBORN - During the NJCAA Region 3 Women's Basketball Championship game, the No. 2 Jamestown Community College women's basketball team came up short against No. 1 Niagara County Community College Sunday afternoon, 78-60.

 

The Jayhawks (13-14) were led by guard Kymi Nance (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) with 23 points while guard Sydney Burk (Jamestown, NY/Southwestern High) added 16 points including three three-pointers. Forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) added another double-double on the year, scoring 10 points while grabbing 17 rebounds (3 rebounds, 14 defense).

 

JCC jumped out to a quick 8-3 thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers from Nance on back-to-back possessions. The Thunderwolves answered with a pair of baskets to make it 8-7 with five minutes left in the frame.

 

NCCC kept it within one possession over the next few minutes before the Jayhawks scored six unanswered to make it 19-12 with two minutes left in the quarter. Burk added a free throw in the closing minutes as JCC took a 20-14 lead into the second quarter.

 

The Jayhawks maintained the lead over the first seven minutes of the second frame. A three-pointer from guard Lauren Alfa (Mayville, NY/Chautauqua Lake) helped push the Jayhawk lead to 32-27 with under three minutes until the break.

 

The Thunderwolves got the lead back with a minute to go until half, going on a 7-0 run. JCC didn't waver as they trailed 37-35 going into halftime.

 

NCCC used a strong second half to help pull the game out of reach, outscoring the Jayhawks 41-25.

 

The Jayhawks went 22-for-62 (35.5 percent) from the field while the Thunderwolves went 29-for-83 (34.9 percent) from the floor. JCC held the slight edge on the glass, grabbing 51 rebounds to NCCC's 49 rebounds.

 

After the game both Hicks and Nance were named to the All-Tournament Team with stellar performances. Hicks averaged 10.5 points and 18.5 rebounds with Nance averaging 20 points throughout the tournament.

 

The Jayhawks will now wait to see who they will face in the Eastern District Championships on Saturday, March 5th. Districts will consist of JCC, NCCC and the winner of the Region 15 and Region 19 championships. All games will be played at NCCC.
