Jayhawks' Valiant Effort Not Enough Against No. 13 Niagara County

JAMESTOWN - Facing the No. 13 team in the nation the Jamestown Community College men's basketball team fell to Niagara County Community College Saturday afternoon, 90-73.

 

The Jayhawks (2-20, 0-5 Region 3) had six players in double figures scoring the ball led by guard Jafar Yahuza (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) followed by guard Brian Fajardo (Bronx, NY/Aeci Charter HS) adding 12 points. Forward Gonzalo Luque (Madrid, Spain/Instituto Ortega y Gasset) had a double-double, scoring 11 points while grabbing 11 rebounds (2 offense, 9 rebounds) to go along with five assists.

 

The Thunderwolves jumped out to a 25-16 lead at the halfway point of the first half but JCC came back swinging, scoring six unanswered to close the gap. Forward Moussa Kaba (Jamaica, NY/Martin Luther HS) got the run going, getting the layup and the foul. Yahuza followed up the score with back-to-back scores of his own to make it 25-22 with eight minutes remaining in the half.

 

NCCC grew their lead back to seven at the five minute mark, leading 33-26. JCC dug deep once again, scoring seven unanswered to make it 33-33 with Fajardo leading the charge with six made free throws. The Thunderwolves took back the momentum, going on an 8-0 run to take a 41-33 lead into the break.

 

The Jayhawks came out of the half on a mission, scoring 12 of the game's next 17 points to trail 46-45 after a Kaba three-pointer with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation. The Thunderwolves quickly pushed their lead back to 13 points with under nine minutes remaining.

 

Continuing to grind out the game, the Jayhawks went on an 11-2 run with a pair of three-pointer from forward Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) and another from Yahuza to make it a 71-66 game with 6:27 left in the game. 

 

The valiant effort came up short down the stretch as NCCC was able to pull away in the closing minutes.

 

The Jayhawks went 29-for-67 (46 percent) from the floor while going 7-for-23 (30.4 percent). The Thunderwolves shot 31-for-67 (46.3 percent) from the field while going 12-for-33 (36.4 percent) from beyond the arc. JCC held the advantage in scoring in the paint, scoring 40 points to NCCC's 30 points.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Wednesday, February 9th, as they host Monroe Community College. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
