JAMESTOWN – Looking to get back in the win column Thursday night, the Jamestown Community College volleyball team got the win over Niagara County Community College, needing five sets to do so.

The Jayhawks (7-6, 2-0 WNYAC) were able to take set one, 25-17. Both teams were evenly match until they both hit double-digit points, that was when JCC was able to string together points to take command.

In the second set, the Thunderwolves regrouped and came out swinging. The Jayhawks battled but came up short in the end, 25-23. NCCC carried that momentum into the third set, taking it by a score of 25-23 as well.

Moving to the fourth set, the Jayhawks needed to settle in to make the match go to the deciding set. The teams continued going tic-for-tac with each other but JCC was able to pull away for a 25-20 win to force the deciding set. In the fifth set, the Jayhawks cruised to a 15-7 win to take the match.

Freshman middle hitter Claire Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) led the offensive attack with 12 kills while freshman right side Rayenn Mehciz (Suriname/Mr. Dr. J.C. de Miranda Lyecum) added a career-high nine kills on the night. Emma McCarthy provided offense when needed, finishing with seven kills.

Sophomore Emma Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) had a stellar night in her new role as setter, finishing with 37 assists, 13 digs and four blocks.

Freshman Breanna Gilbert-Hopkins (Falconer, NY/Chautauqua Lake Central) was a force on the back line, tallying a career-high 28 digs while adding four service aces. McCarthy added 22 digs while freshman outside hitter Maggie McClellan (Olean, NY/Olean HS) chipped in with 17 digs and four aces.

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Sunday, October 10th, as they take on SUNY Broome Community College at 1 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex.
