CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College men's soccer team returned to play for the first time following their loss to #4 Cayuga Community College. Looking for a rebound victory, the Lakers would get just that in a 11-0 shutout win over the SUNY Niagara Thunderwolves Sunday afternoon.
The scoring started early for the Lakers, with Ben Domann (Wuppertal, Germany/Gesamtschule Barmen) netting his first of three goals at the 10' mark, assisted by Joao Antonio Rocha (Sergipe, Brazil/Colegio Master), setting the tone for the match. Domann added his second goal just 12 minutes later, this time assisted by Gary Cooper (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia).
Moments later, Rocha found the back of the net off an assist from Cooper to make it 3-0 at the 23' mark. The scoring continued with Allan Matheus (Sergipe, Brazil/Americano Batisa) netting a goal at the 32' mark, assisted by Matt Sanderson (Harrogate, England/Harrogate Grammar School), followed by Sanderson himself scoring just six minutes later off a feed from Joao Viana (Sergipe, Brazil/Colegio Master). Sophomore Juan Mercado Cano (Toluca, Mexico/Unitec) capped off the first half with an unassisted goal, giving the Lakers a comfortable 6-0 lead at halftime.
The second half started much like the first, with Domann completing his hat trick less than two minutes in, assisted by Sergio Baron (Bogota, Colombia/Liceo Matovelle). Freshman Oriol Guzman (Barcelona, Spain/Institute Marti Pous) added another at the 48' mark, assisted by Rocha, bringing the score to 8-0.
The Lakers continued their offensive surge with Joao Pedro Melo de Oliveria (Sergipe, Brazil/Centro de Excelencia Master) scoring at the 57' mark, assisted by Guzman. Carl Pontin (Sunshine Coast, Australia/Mountain Creek State) and Austin Wolfe (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) added late goals, with Pontin scoring off an assist from Carlos Aguiar (Sergipe, Brazil/Colegio Amadeus) and Wolfe capping the game with an unassisted goal at the 85' mark.
The Lakers' defense was just as impressive as their offense, allowing only one shot on goal, which was saved by goalkeeper Harry Eastwick (Christchurch, New Zealand/St. Thomas of Canterbury College). Eastwick played the full 90 minutes, securing his first clean sheet of the season.
The Lakers improve to 5-3-3 and will return to action this coming Wednesday, September 25th on the road at Elmira College at 3 PM.
