Five-Run Seventh Helps Jayhawks Split Home Doubleheader with Niagara County CC

LAKEWOOD - A five-run seventh inning in game two helped the Jamestown Community College softball team split their doubleheader with Niagara County Community College Saturday afternoon.

 

Game 1: Jamestown Community College 2 - Niagara County Community College 7

 

The Thunderwolves jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after two innings to put the Jayhawks (4-16, 4-16 Region 3 West) in a hole. JCC did get on the board in the fifth inning as freshman shortstop Brynn Pagett (Randolph, NY/Randolph HS) came in to score on a passed ball.

 

NCCC added two more runs in the seventh to make it 7-1. Looking to rally, sophomore catcher Gracie Wood, (Warren, PA/Warren Area HS) hit a solo shot deep to right field, getting her third home run of the season.

 

Wood went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run.

 

Freshman pitcher Samantha Heppel (Angola, NY/Lakeshore Sr. HS) went the distance in the circle, giving up four runs while striking out four batters

 

Game 2: Jamestown Community College 11 - Niagara County Community College 7

 

Looking to flip the script in the second game, the Jayhawks fell in a two-run hole after the first inning. In the second inning, Heppel hit her first career home run to chip away at the lead. NCCC answered with three runs to make it 5-1.

 

Heading into the third inning, JCC found their rhythm to score four runs. Sophomore centerfield Abigail Minnekine (Little Valley, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley HS) reached on error, getting freshman first base Abbi Warner (Westfield, NY/Westfield HS) across home. During their next at-bat, freshman third base Emily Horth (Little Valley, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley HS) hit an rbi double to bring Minnekine in to score.

 

Keeping the momentum, Wood hit her own rbi double to score Horth, making it 5-4. Wood tied the game up, scoring on a groundout by Pagett to make it 5-5.

 

The Thunderwolves added two runs in the third to take the 7-5 lead.

 

Sophomore right fielder Mackenzie Watson (Jamesotwn, NY/ Jamestown HS) added a run in the fourth, scoring on a passed ball to make it 7-6.

 

After two scoreless innings, the Jayhawks exploded for five runs in the seventh to secure the win. Warner started the scoring, scoring on a passed ball. Horth kept the offense humming, hitting an rbi triple, scoring Minnekine. Horth came across the plate soon after on an error to make it 9-7.

 

Heppel stayed hot at the plate, hitting an rbi single to score Wood. Heppel scored the last run of the game on a passed ball.

 

Warner led the hitting, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Horth, Wood and Heppel each had two rbis during the game.

 

Heppel went the distance in the circle, giving up six earned runs and striking out four batters.

 

The Jayhawks will close out the season tomorrow, May 2nd, as they travel to Niagara County Community College for a 1 p.m. start.
