Five Players In Double Figures; Jayhawks Downed By No. 20 Niagara County

SANBORN - Going into a tough road game, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team fought to the very end against No. 20 Niagara County Community College, 68-60.

 

The Jayhawks (11-13, 2-3 Region 3) had two players with double-doubles as forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) had 18 points and 13 rebounds (4 offense, 9 defense) while guard Zalika Stevens (Ajax, Ontario, Canada/Thornlea Secondary School) added 10 points and 12 rebounds (6 offense, 6 defense).

 

JCC had three other players score in double digits with guard Kymi Nance (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) score 12 points while guards Sydney Burk (Jamestown, NY/Southwestern High) and Lauren Alfa (Mayville, NY/Chautauqua Lake Central) chipped in with 10 points each.

 

After trailing with just under four minutes in the first quarter, the Jayhawk defense held the Thunderwolves scoreless and went on a 13-0 run to close the frame out, up 20-10. During the stretch, Nance scored six of the points including a three-pointer with Alfa also adding a three-pointer on the run.

 

NCCC flipped the script to start the second frame, going on an 11-2 run to trail 22-21 with 5:01 until the break. Burke halted the run, netting a three-pointer off the dish from Hicks. Hicks also added a pair of free throws as the Jayahwks went up 27-21. The Thunderwolves closed the half out on a 9-2 run to go up 30-29.

 

The teams traded blows well into the fourth quarter, with neither team gaining more than a two possession advantage. 

 

The Thunderwolves were able to slowly create separation, scoring back-to-back threes which helped them get a 60-46 lead with six minutes remaining in regulation.

 

JCC kept battling until the end, closing the game out on a 14-8 run.

 

The Jayhawks went 21-for-66 (31.8 percent) from the field while the Thunderwolves went 26-for-77 (33.8 percent) from the floor. The teams were near even on the glass with NCCC having the slight edge, grabbing 49 boards to JCC's 48.

 

The Jayhawks will look to get the season sweep over Monroe Community College this Saturday, February 19th, in their regular-season finale. Tip is set for 1 p.m.
