Niagara County Community College dropped a pair of one-run games at this past weekend's Region III Final Four at Veteran's Memorial Park in Little Falls. The Thunderwolves, who were ranked No. 5 in the final NJCAA Div. III poll, finished the season 38-10 overall.
Finger Lakes CC 2, Niagara CCC 1
Sophomore pitcher Joe Barberio was the hard-luck loser despite tossing a nine-inning one-hitter. The righty allowed just one earned run and struck out 11. Sophomore Vincent Chiarenza drove in classmate Garrett Boldt for NCCC's lone run. Sophomore Will Lawrence was 2-for-3 with a triple in the loss.
Herkimer College 11, Niagara CCC 10 (11 inn.)
The Thunderwolves notched 23 hits, but it wasn't enough in a wild back-and-forth contest with the eventual regional champions. Lawrence finished 5-for-6, while sophomore Troy Banks went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and both Boldt and freshman Nick Spyropoulos added three hits and two RBIs.
* Barberio and sophomore outfielder Matt Kruszka were named to the annual Region III All-Tournament team following the event.
