Lakers Finish Jamestown CC POD 2-1

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes Community College women's volleyball team traveled to Jamestown, N.Y. for the Jamestown POD Saturday afternoon. The Lakers completed a successful outing, finishing the POD 2-1, however, the Lakers had their 11-game win streak snapped in a close back-to-back battle with Erie Community College who defeated the team 3-2.

Lakers vs. Jamestown CC

Freshman Brooke DeGroff (Castile, N.Y./ Letchworth) had a night to remember, dominating the Jayhawks with 23 points. DeGroff finished the match with 17 kills, 6 aces, and 19 digs to lead the team. Teammate Kaidyn VanDelinder (Gananda, N.Y./ Gananda) followed with an impressive outing herself, adding 10 kills, 1 block solo, and 1 block assist on the day.

Sophomores Kayla Fetcie (Victor, N.Y./ Victor) and Meghan Johnson (Phelps, N.Y./ Newark) followed with 8 and 9.5 points each. Fetcie added 7 kills, 1 dig, and 2 block assists while Johnson finished with 7 kills, 1 ace, 3 digs, and 3 block assists. 

Other contributors for the Lakers included Adriana Botello (Holley, N.Y./ Holley) with 3 kills, 11 assists, 4 aces, and 10 digs, Olivia Sheehan (Irondequoit, N.Y./ West Irondequoit) who tallied 1 assist, 2 aces, and 16 digs, Kierstin Comerford (Geneva, N.Y./ Geneva) with 2 aces and 1 dig, and Sage Barnedo (Silver Springs, M.D./ Springbrook) who finished with a team-high 26 assists to go along with 2 kills, 3 aces, and 3 digs.

Lakers vs. Erie CC

Lakers Meghan Johnson and Brooke DeGroff combined for 23.5 points in 5 sets played against the Kats. Johnson would finish with 10 kills, 1 ace, and 8 digs, while DeGroff added 12 kills, 9 digs, and 1 block assist to her tally on the afternoon.

Adriana Botello and Sage Barnedo would each set their teammates up, with Botello finishing with 12 assists along with 1 ace and 5 digs, and Barnedo adding 17 assists along with 2 kills, 2 aces, 1 dig, and 1 block assist.

Freshman libero Olivia Sheehan added 1 kill, 1 ace, and 18 digs in 5 sets played, while Emer O'Brien (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua) saw time on the floor and finished with 10 digs in 3 sets played.

The Lakers saw contributions from Kayla Fetcie who finished with 9.5 points with 8 kills, 1 dig, 1 block solo, and 1 block assist, and Kaidyn VanDelinder who would end the match with 4 kills, 2 block solos, and 1 block assist.

Lakers vs. Niagara County CC

Lakers Freshman Kaidyn VanDelinder and Brooke DeGroff took the charge for the team, with 8.5 points apiece. VanDelinder came up big on defense with 1 block solo and 1 block assist to go along with 7 kills. DeGroff followed with 7 kills, 1 assist, 1 ace, 4 digs, and 1 block assist. 

As they have all season, Lakers Sophomores Meghan Johnson and Kayla Fetcie each stepped up with 8 and 7 points respectively. Johnson finished with 6 kills, 2 aces, and 4 digs, while Fetcie tallied 5 kills, 1 ace, 2 digs, and 2 block assists.

Freshman Adriana Botello and Sage Barnedo each played an integral role in setting up their teammates. Botello finished with 19 assists, along with 3 kills and 1 dig. Barnedo would end the afternoon with 17 assists to go with 3 kills, 1 ace, and 3 digs.

At the conclusion of Saturday's POD, the Lakers are faced with the final stretch of the regular season with 8 matches left on the schedule before regional play begins. The Lakers were able to finish the POD with a win and will take that momentum into their next match at home versus the Tribunes of Monroe Community College on Tuesday, September 27th at 6pm. The match will serve as a rematch for the two squads, as the Lakers defeated the Tribunes earlier in the season, 3-0 at the Jefferson Invitational.
