Baseball brings home regional title

Niagara County Community College won its third consecutive Region III Championship this past weekend at Falcon Park in Auburn, NY. The Thunderwolves (42-5 overall) went 3-0 in the regional tournament and clinched a berth in the NJCAA Div. III World Series with a walk-off win over long-time rival and reigning National Champion Herkimer College.

This year's World Series is slated for May 27-May 31/June 1 at Pioneer Park in Greeneville, Tenn. The official bracket, seeding and matchups will be announced at 10 a.m. Tuesday on the NJCAA Network. The campus community is invited to a "watch party" in the Learning Commons. Light refreshments will be served.

Niagara CCC 5, Erie CC 0

NCCC sophomore Ryan Birchard improved to 7-0 on the season after throwing six shutout innings. The righty struck out eight. Classmate Kyle Finn picked up the three-inning save. He allowed just one hit. At the plate, sophomore Mitchell Holtz was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, sophomore Conner Hoehman had two hits and scored twice and sophomore Owen Stevenson chipped in with a pair of two-baggers. 

Niagara CCC 13, Herkimer College 11

Freshman Matthew Procopio ripped a grand slam and sophomore Howard Stuckey was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the high-scoring affair. Hoehman added two hits and two RBIs, while Holtz and sophomore Alex Minnehan scored twice. Minnehan also threw out the potential game-tying run from center field in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sophomore Andrew Bench got the win after throwing 5.1 innings of solid relief. 

Niagara CCC 6, Herkimer College 5

Freshman Nicholas Schulz' ninth-inning sacrifice fly lifted the T-Wolves to the title. Stuckey was the lone N-Trip player with two hits. He also had an RBI. Bench moved to 4-0 on the year after recording the final out in the top of the ninth frame. Sophomore Hunter Loomis and freshman Andrew Damiani both put together solid outings on the bump. 

* The All-Tournament team included Birchard (Tournament MVP), Bench, Procopio and Minnehan.
