Softball registers sweep of FLCC

Niagara County Community College opened Region III play with a sweep of host Finger Lakes Community College on a brisk Thursday afternoon. The Thunderwolves, tied for third in the latest regional coaches poll, improved to 6-10 overall and 2-0 in Region III play. The home opener for NCCC is set for 3 p.m. Thurs. April 6 vs. Monroe Community College.

Niagara CCC 6, Finger Lakes CC 3

Freshman Samantha Steindel was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs as the T-Wolves out-scored the Lakers 3-0 over the final three innings. Sophomore Maggiemay Murrins ripped a two-run double, classmate Shelby Wolf had a run-scoring triple and second-year outfielder Mackenzie Gozdziak added two hits and two runs scored. Freshman Leah Bailey earned her fifth win of the season, going the distance with five Ks.

Niagara CCC 15, Finger Lakes CC 2 (5 inn.)

Murrins was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs in the mercy-rule victory. Sophomore Mariah Semple finished with two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored, freshman Madison Vekich was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and the sophomore tandem of Sydney Sexton and Gozdziak contributed two hits and an RBI apiece. Freshman Emma Rozborski gave up just four hits and struck out six to earn her first collegiate victory in the circle.
