Softball splits with Cannoneers

Niagara County Community College split a pair of tight Region III contests with Jefferson Community College at the Watertown Fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon. The Thunderwolves are now 12-13 overall and 8-3 in regional play. Next up is a doubleheader at Columbia-Greene Community College. First pitch is set for Noon Sunday.

Niagara CCC 3, Jefferson CC 2 (8 inn.)

NCCC sophomore Mariah Semple drove in the go-ahead run and then scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning. Semple knocked in classmate Mackenzie Gozdziak, while sophomore Maggiemay Murrins brought Semple around with a sacrifice fly. Freshman pitcher Leah Bailey improved to 9-2 on the season as she allowed just four hits and one earned run in a complete-game effort.

Jefferson CC 2, Niagara CCC 1

The Thunderwolves mustered just one hit - an RBI single from sophomore Sydnie Luckman - in the setback. Freshman Samantha Steindel scored the only run and freshman pitcher Emma Rozborski was the hard-luck loser as she allowed just four hits and one earned run.
