Mathews named MOW at District Tourney

Niagara County Community College freshman heavyweight Trevon Mathews was named Region III Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning his bracket at this past weekend's annual NJCAA Northeast District Championships hosted by Nassau Community College.

Mathews, along with teammates Ethan Ferro, Cortez Henderson and Simon Lingle, have qualified for the NJCAA National Championships, which are set for March 3-4 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Mathews received a bye into the 285-pound finals before knocking off Patrick Ancewicz of Nassau CC via a 5-2 decision.

Ferro was the runner-up at 157 pounds, falling to returning NJCAA All-American Adam Busiello of Nassau CC.

Henderson made the finals and took second at 165 pounds after a narrow 4-3 semifinal win over Aiden Moduro of SUNY Ulter.

Lingle was also a second-place finisher, dropping a lengthy title bout to Xavier Pemmellis of the host Lions.

Josh Gill (125) and Nikalis Voelker (149) took third for NCCC, which finished third in the team standings behind Nassau CC and Jamestown CC.
