Six NCCC wrestlers place at NYS championships

Niagara County Community College had six grapplers place at this past weekend's 21st annual New York State Collegiate Championships hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology. There was no team scoring at the event.

Freshman Hassan Dobbins led the charge with a fourth-place finish at 149 pounds. Dobbins won five matches via decision, including three over Alfred State grapplers. He is now 12-2 on the young season. Teammate Nikalis Voelker took fifth in the same weight class.

Fellow frosh Trevon Mathews, a heavyweight at 285 pounds, also took fourth. Mathews pinned James Clarkson of Nassau Community College and had a pair of narrow wins over grapplers from Oswego State. Mathews is now 6-2. 

Joining Voelker on the fifth-place podium were freshmen Ethan Ferro (157) and Joel Nivar (184). Ferro, who moved to 8-2 on the season, had two pinfall victories over opponents from Merchant Marine Academy and RIT. Nivar won his fifth-place match with a pin of Nicholas Aliani of SUNY Oneonta. He is now 5-3.

Sophomore Cortez Henderson rounded out those that placed, taking seventh at 165 pounds. He is now 7-6.

NCCC returns to action this coming weekend with both Dual and Open action at rival Jamestown Community College.
