Ferro & Mathews place at Whizzer Open

Niagara County Community College had a pair of grapplers place at this past weekend's Whizzer Open hosted by Henry Ford College. The 17-team tournament that featured grapplers from across the Northeast, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic had no team scoring.

NCCC freshman Ethan Ferro took second place at 157 pounds. He picked up three wins via pinfall before losing a hard-fought 11-8 decision to Cameron White of Triton in the finals.

Classmate Trevon Mathews was third in the ultra-competitive heavyweight division. Mathews lost a 5-2 decision to eventual champion Billy Reed-Bodey of Otterbein in the opening round. He then earned five straight wins in the wrestlebacks - three via pinfall - to take third.

Other wrestlers who competed and bowed out just before placing included: freshman Josh Gill (125), sophomore Nikalis Voelker (149) and freshman Simon Lingle (174).

The Thunderwolves return to the mats at 11 a.m. Saturday with a tri-match at SUNY Brockport.
