BUFFALO, NY… The Genesee Cougars women's basketball team opened their season with a challenging matchup against SUNY Niagara, falling 102-21 on Saturday afternoon at the Burt Flickinger Center. They would bounce back with a commanding win over Erie's Kats, with a final score of 61-49.
In their game against Niagara, Kiara Van led the Cougars with 5 points and added three rebounds. Ava Santiago contributed four points and three rebounds, while Elle Peterson scored seven points with four rebounds. Madison Hughson added five points and six boards. Genesee struggled offensively, shooting just 20% from the field, while SUNY Niagara capitalized with 66 points off turnovers, ultimately controlling the game.
Jaelyn Morris led Genesee with a game-high 28 points and secured 12 rebounds, showcasing a strong offensive performance. Kiara Van contributed 10 points and five rebounds, while Ava Santiago added eight points off the bench. Defensively, Genesee capitalized with 37 points off turnovers, while holding Erie to 29% shooting from the field.
