Thunderwolves shut down Red Barons

SUNY Niagara tossed a pair of shutouts against host Corning Community College in Region III action on Saturday afternoon. The Thunderwolves, ranked No. 5 in the latest NJCAA Div. III poll, improved to 42-8 overall and 26-2 in regional play. The same two teams meet for another twinbill at 1 p.m. Sunday at Sal Maglie Stadium.

SUNY Niagara 12, Corning CC 0 (6 inn.)

Sophomore Peter Skulski improved to 5-1 on the season as he allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters in six innings of work. Freshman Gavyn Boyle led the offense, finishing with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Also for the T-Wolves, sophomore Steven Merkel was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, freshman Braden Hill added two hits and two RBIs and freshman Keygan Miksa chipped in two RBIs. Sophomore Owen Silliman and freshman Weston Thompson were each 2-for-3. Thompson stole five bases and Silliman had four swipes.

SUNY Niagara 10, Corning CC 0 (5 inn.)

Freshman Joshua Toolen gave up just one hit and recorded eight Ks in four innings of work. Silliman, meanwhile, was 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. Boyle added two hits, two runs and an RBI, Merkel was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, sophomore Joshua Milleville went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored and freshman Nigel Sebastianelli finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
