Florance, Cook take 2nd at NYS Championships

Niagara County Community College freshmen Joseph Florance and Kace Cook took second place in the freshman/sophomore division at this past weekend's New York State Collegiate Championships hosted by Nassau Community College.

Florance was runner-up at 125 pounds after narrowly falling in the title bout to Mason Drew of Alfred State College. In the quarterfinals, Florance pinned Oneonta State's Tristan Hinchcliff. He advanced to the finals after a forfeit. Florance is now 11-1 on the year with seven victories coming via pinfall.

Cook, meanwhile, was second at 157 pounds after dropping a close 5-4 decision to Frank Volpe (unattached) in the championship round. In the quarterfinals, Cook beat Ethan Morrison (Alfred State College) by technical fall and followed that up with a pinfall victory vs. Aaron Nelson (Ithaca College) in the semifinals. Cook is now 13-2 with 10 wins via pin.

Classmate Cameron Hall was sixth at 197 pounds with a pin over Shaquille Daniel of Oswego State. It was his second pin of the season.

The Thunderwolves return to the mats at 9 a.m. Sun. Jan. 28 at the annual Jamestown Community College Open.
