Mathews make semifinals at Summa Invite

Freshman Te'Shaun Mathews went 3-1 and reached the semifinals of the annual John Summa Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Baldwin Wallace University.

Mathews won via pinfall, technical fall and decision before dropping a narrow 3-0 match vs. the eventual champion at 149 pounds. Mathews, who is now 27-2 on the season, medically defaulted to a sixth-place finish.

Sophomore Mike Catanzaro, meanwhile, placed fifth at 133 pounds. He was 4-2 at the meet, improving to 18-6 on the year.

Classmate Michael Syposs took seventh at 157 pounds. He is now 28-10 for the season.

The trio of Ayden Downing (125), Vinny Falsetti (141) and Joseph Cicco (165) each went 1-2 at the event.

The Thunderwolves finished with 48.0 points, which was good for 11th place in a field of NCAA Div. III and II colleges and universities. Host Baldwin Wallace won with 197.0 points.

SUNY Niagara returns to the mats at 6 p.m. Wednesday for a Region III road dual with Onondaga Community College.
