Offensive explosion for SUNY Niagara

SUNY Niagara exploded for 31 runs in a Region III sweep of visiting Tompkins-Cortland Community College on Sunday afternoon at Sal Maglie Stadium. The Thunderwolves, ranked No. 6 in the latest NJCAA Div. III poll, improved to 33-7 overall and 17-1 in regional play. SUNY Niagara returns to action at 2 p.m. Thursday when it travels to TC3.

Sophomore Owen Silliman had a rare inside-the-park grand slam and finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs and three runs scored to lead the offense. Classmate Steven Merkel had two hits and two RBIs, sophomore Brett Johnson and freshman Keygan Miksa each went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and freshman Braeden Dyck added an RBI triple. Sophomore Joshua Milleville improved to 5-0 on the mound as he allowed just two hits and had seven strikeouts. 

SUNY Niagara 21, Tompkins-Cortland CC 2 (5 inn.)

Freshman Zach Prior had a career-high four RBIs and also scored twice in the win. Classmate Braden Hill added three RBIs and three runs scored and fellow frosh Nigel Sebastianelli chipped in with three RBIs and scored twice. Silliman, meanwhile, finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Merkel clubbed two doubles with two RBIs and two runs scored. Miksa scored three runs. Sophomore Zachary Fike went to 3-0 on the bump as he recorded nine Ks in four innings of work.
